The intersessional meetings on mine action began today, June 17, 2025, at the International Conference Center in Geneva, with the participation of hundreds of delegates representing states, international and non-governmental organizations working toward a world free of anti-personnel mines.
This year’s meeting topics focus on the current state of demining in mine-affected countries, as well as the challenges that nearly all countries are currently facing regarding the funding of mine action activities. A significant emphasis has also been placed on providing adequate support to mine victims and ensuring their reintegration into society.
Representatives from Bosnia and Herzegovina are also participating in the Intersessional Meetings, which will run until June 20 in Geneva. In their address, they will reflect on the current state of demining in the country and present the revised Mine Action Strategy of Bosnia and Herzegovina for the period 2025–2027. The revised Strategy is expected to significantly contribute to better assessments and a clearer definition of the next steps required to meet the deadlines set by the Ottawa Convention.
To accelerate the demining process in Bosnia and Herzegovina, increased financial resources and greater engagement from all levels of government—including local communities—in the funding of mine action activities are needed. Additionally, it is necessary to address issues related to human resources and technical equipment, as well as to enhance the level of engagement, productivity, and efficiency of demining capacities at both the state and entity levels.
